Saladar. Diteisti

Hon. Colonial Secretary,

The S.S. "Singaporean", registered as a British ship

in Hongkong, was transferred under Bill of Sele dated 29th December, 1919, from the ownership of the Cheong Yue S.8.Company! of Victoria, Hongkong, to that of a firm named Frederic Gaebele

& Co. of Calcutta. My authority for permitting the transfer to

the new owners was a telegram from the Government of Bengal, from which I gathered that the firm was a limited liability com- pany, and as such qualified to own a British ship under Section

1 of the Merchant Shipping Act, 1894.

2. Doubts having arisen as to the status of the company, I telegraphed to Calcutta on the 13th instant, asking for

information on the subject, and today I have received a tele-

gram telling me that the firm is not a limited liability com- pany, and is not registered. As a result, it becomes necessary to make certain alterations on the register, as the partners in the company have to be registered individually as joint. partners. I request authority from H.E. the Governor to make these altera-

tions in the register book.
